Mila 2.0: Interview and Giveaway

Happy Release Day
to Debra Driza and MILA 2.0!
We are excited to participate in the blog tour for this book, which I recently reviewed HERE.

Today we get to share with you an interview with author, Debra Driza.

RL: Welcome, Debra! I always wonder what authors were like as children. Were you always a storyteller, or did that come later?
DD: I don't know that I was a storyteller as a child, but I loved both books and movies, from a really young age. I'd watch the same movies over and over again, then drive my family nuts by reciting lines, complete with cheesy accents. Apart from that, I was a spazzy, overly chatty child. I remember that my desk in 2nd grade had to be in the corner all by itself (and sometimes even facing the wall). Oops.

RL: What was the last book you read and loved?
DD: I just read a book that's coming out in 2014 by Liz Czukas called COIN FLIP (though it might be retitled.) It's like the hilarious Prom version of Sliding Doors. Before that, I loved PRODIGY by Marie Lu.

RL: Which character in MILA 2.0 is most like you?
Oh gosh-- overall, none of them, really. The closest a character gets to me is probably Mila in her more random moments! But I'm not really experiencing much existential angst, and she's got a TON of that. I definitely have my awkward moments, too, so possibly a bit like Lukas. (What if I said General Holland? Would you be afraid? :D)

RL: I love the theme in the book of exploring what exactly comprises our humanity. When you were writing, was this something you intentionally chose to address, or was it a happy accident?
DD: Definitely intentional. To me, it's one of MILA's underlying themes, and something that adds depth to all the CAR CHASE! TORTURE! FIGHT SCENE! stuff going on. While I was writing this story, I really did have to stop and think: what DOES make us human?

RL: If this book was a dessert, what would it be?
DD: Mmmm, dessert! Probably something flaming, because of the fire in the book (and prequel), like maybe a flaming chocolate lava cake. Mmmm, chocolate.

RL: What is your favorite bird?
DD: Oh dear, I have to have a favorite bird? Can I say Super Chicken? No? Okay, hmmm, I guess I'd go with penguins (so cute!) or ducklings (so cute! and fuzzy!) Baby chicks are pretty adorable too, though. Thanks for having me here!

Thanks for stopping by, Debra!

Summary from Goodreads:
Mila 2.0 is the first book in an electrifying sci-fi thriller series about a teenage girl who discovers that she is an experiment in artificial intelligence.

Mila was never meant to learn the truth about her identity. She was a girl living with her mother in a small Minnesota town. She was supposed to forget her past —that she was built in a secret computer science lab and programmed to do things real people would never do.

Now she has no choice but to run—from the dangerous operatives who want her terminated because she knows too much and from a mysterious group that wants to capture her alive and unlock her advanced technology. However, what Mila’s becoming is beyond anyone’s imagination, including her own, and it just might save her life.

Mila 2.0 is Debra Driza’s bold debut and the first book in a Bourne Identity-style trilogy that combines heart-pounding action with a riveting exploration of what it really means to be human. Fans of I Am Number Four will love Mila for who she is and what she longs to be—and a cliffhanger ending will leave them breathlessly awaiting the sequel.

I’m Debra Driza, and I’m a physical-therapist-turned-Young-Adult-author and a stay-at-home mom. Not to be confused with a stay-at-home mistress—those are the ones who eat bon-bons and watch soap operas all day long. The soap operas sort of fall by the wayside when you have a seven-year old, a three-year-old, three dogs (one of them seriously defective), one extremely messy husband, and deadlines to meet.
Seriously, though–my family is great. I wouldn’t change one second of our crazy, messy, unorganized lives. What this house lacks in a paper or dog-free spot on the couch, it makes up for in laughter and hugs.
I’m represented by Taylor Martindale of the Sandra Dijkstra Literary Agency.  The first book in my YA sci-fi thriller series debuts in Fall 2012 from Katherine Tegen Books/Harper Collins.
