Best I've Read 2012: Send Me a Sign by Tiffany Schmidt
The sixth book we are featuring this year is Send Me a Sign by Tiffany Schmidt.
Paula had the opportunity to interview Gyver, a character from Send Me a Sign, for the event and we are also offering our readers a chance to win a copy of Send Me a Sign. Paula @ Reading Lark: Since this book is primarily about Mia, why don't you explain how you two know each other.
Gyver: My dad works with her mom. They bought neighboring lots in our development when it was still being built. I was just a baby and Mia was a couple weeks from being born when our families moved in. There are pictures of me and her all the way back to the day she came home from the hospital. I really can’t tell you my first memory of Mi, because I don’t remember my life without her.
Gyver: Yeah, there’s a lot of teasing behind it too. Thanks, Mom and Dad. Basically, when my parents were first dating they used to love to watch MacGyver together. They’d get take out and have duct-tape, dorky date nights.
I’m mostly just grateful it wasn’t The A-Team… I could’ve been Hannibal or Templeton.
Paula @ Reading Lark: When you were little, what did you think you wanted to be when you grew up?
Gyver: Well, first it was the Green Power Ranger (Mi wanted to be Pink). Then we went through a phase where we were going to be both explorers and pirates—I guess we’d explore islands and then know the best places to bury our treasure? All I remember is that it involved lots of map-making and wearing eye patches. And Mia claims she almost got her mom to agree to get her a parrot. I call bull on that. There’s no way Mrs. Moore would ever let a bird in her house.
I was about six when I first started piano. Mia was my first audience since she usually got stuck listening to me practice—and she was the first person to say “You should be a rockstar!” And I know better than to argue with her—in this case I don’t even want to.
Paula @ Reading Lark: Tell us something about Mia that she might be embarrassed for us to know.
Gyver: Like how my mom made her a cake the first time she got her period? And made our whole family walk over to deliver it? And I thought it would be hilarious to pull out my guitar and play Urge Overkill’s version of “Girl, You’ll be a Woman Soon”? Something like that?
I should probably start running now, because if she sees this, she’ll kill me.
Paula @ Reading Lark: I hear you're kind of a musician. Who are a couple of your favorite bands?
Gyver: Favorite band is not like favorite color or favorite food. It’s much more complicated than that. It depends on how I’m feeling, what’s going on in my life, what season it is, what else I’m doing at the time, whether I’m looking to relax, get inspired, get motivated, calm down, energize…
Um, yeah. I could write you a novel-length answer but it wouldn’t be interesting to anyone but me. Maybe I’ll just skip this question. Or I can tell you the last three songs I listened to and you can interpret them however you want.

About the Novel

ReplyDeleteThe book sounds like a really great read. And a really sad one at that. It might be kinda of hard to read since my dad has cancer to. But it sounds good and I would love to know what all happens in it.
