Teaser Tuesday: Foretold, The Forever Song, Guy in Real Life, The Recruit, & There Will Come a Time

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly feature, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.

If I'd learned one thing on this long trip, it was that people turned into complete freaks when they were scared and a sudden Earth-wide snowstorm made for one wicked fear catalyst. I'd seen fights in grocery stores, fights in the snowdrifts on the sides of the highways and had even watched one lady jump into car and drive off while the owner stood holding the gas pump nozzle.

The man in the bed was huge. Not tall or muscular, just... big. His stomach bulged against his hospital gown, his cheeks were pale but round, and his neck was thicker than anyone's I'd ever seen. I'd heard the term fat before, but had never encountered such a thing before this. Hunger and starvation were so common in my world; I couldn't imagine having so much food that your body would store it away for later.

"I fell asleep early," I say, and the lies have begun, because I am not about to admit that I spent the night--right through till nearly one in the morning--pretending to be an elven girl, bombarded with untoward comments from a ingratiating hunter and foul-mouthed dwarf just to help me level. "Anyway, tonight for sure."

It's a promise I intend to keep. In the clear, cold light of Wednesday morning, my behavior last night seems even to me a perverted step off the rails. I vow silently to keep my interest in Svetlana Allegheny (her last name was easy to find; how many Svetlanas do you think there are at Central High School?) on a purely appropriate level. No more of this online impersonation junk.

The air was still between them as she studied him. His eyes, as guarded as they were, hinted at great pain and loss. 'You've had it tough, hey?' Jaz asked quietly. It was the way Ryan had said the words, so full of sincerity and weight. She saw a flash of anger stretch across his tight jaw, as if he was replaying whatever it was that had caused him so much pain. But a second later he shut down, sealing his eyes with a steely glaze and burying it all. 'Yeah, you could say that,' he answered softly. Jaz felt the urge to touch his arm or grasp his hand and give it a reassuring squeeze, but hell...she hardly knew the bloke. He could be a raving loony for all she knew.

"Grace!" I yell into the darkness. No one answers back. I try again. "Grace!" Not even an echo. "It should have been me," I whisper. I close my eyes and see her again, that blank stare. The guilt overwhelms me, and I wish I were the dead one.

  2. All the books you featured today sound good to me, but the first one really grabbed me. An earth-wide snowstorm? Gotta know more about that!
My Teaser is from WITHOUT A TRACE.
