Throwback Thursday: The Egypt Game

Throwback Thursday is a new feature at Reading Lark. We'll still be doing some Book Boyfriend Posts and Book BFF Posts on Thursdays as well, but the Larks wanted a little variety on Thursdays. Throwback Thursday will allow us to celebrate some of the reads we loved way back when...

The Egypt Game
By: Zilpha Keatley Snyder
Published: 1967

This is a book I remember reading, and reading, and reading. And then reading again. When I found a copy, with the original cover (pictures above) at Half Price Books I HAD to have it! And after leafing through it, it holds up nearly 59 years later, it probably is a Newberry winner for a reason, after all.

The Egypt Game captures the magic of meeting a new friend and realizing you have absolutely everything in common. The game itself is a vehicle for awesome Egyptian info and stories, and a backdrop for an intriguing mystery. This book was as close as I'd come to magical realism as a pre-teen and I LOVED it!

Summary via Goodreads

The first time Melanie Ross meets April Hall, she's not sure they'll have anything in common. But she soon discovers that they both love anything to do with ancient Egypt. When they stumble upon a deserted storage yard behind the A-Z Antiques and Curio Shop, Melanie and April decide it's the perfect sport for the Egypt Game.

Before long there are six Egyptians instead of two. After school and on weekends they all meet to wear costumes, hold ceremonies, and work on their secret code.

Everyone thinks it's just a game, until strange things begin happening to the players. Has the Egypt Game gone too far?
