I had never heard of Melissa Pearl until this year. I happened upon a new book of hers called I Know Lucy and she has quickly become one of my favorite YA authors. Of course, I jumped at the chance to review True Colors, the first book in The Mask series.

Caitlyn is a popular girl who is the ultimate people pleaser. She hates conflict and does whatever she can to avoid contention. However, after a troubling encounter with a homeless man, she discovers that she now has a power which will make her unable to avoid conflict any longer. Caitlyn can see behind the masks that others put in place to hide their true feelings. This causes major problems with her boyfriend Chase and her best friend Stella.

As Caitlyn returns to school after her eventful weekend, she begins to see that most of the students at Palisades Charter High School are not what they seem. Some are simply insecure students hiding behind rough exteriors. But Caitlyn discovers that others are truly terrified of something that is going on within the halls of her high school. And once she sees beneath the veneer of Indie and Liam, the "golden couple" of the school, she realizes that there is something much darker and more sinister happening than she could have imagined.

Caitlyn has to grow up quickly as she begins to learn more about her power and how to help the students at school. She realizes Stella might not be the friend she can really depend on. She quickly discovers Chase's true motives and breaks things off with him. Fortunately, this allows her to start a relationship with someone who can love, support and even help her with this newly discovered power.

This book has mystery, suspense, danger, and romance all rolled into one enjoyable adventure! True Colors is the perfect name for this book. It was a quick read and I'm thrilled that I have the opportunity to read Melissa Pearl's next book in the series, Two-Faced. Highly recommended!

Caitlyn Davis always cruised through life, not being the type to ruffle feathers or involve herself in high school drama. That is, until a chance encounter with a strange, homeless man changes everything.

Suddenly, Caitlyn has the ability to see behind people's masks. She discovers that her life isn’t as simple as she imagined and high school is filled with secrets...some very sinister ones.

Unable to ignore her new gift, Caitlyn embarks on a mission to learn why one of her friends suddenly appears terrified, but masks her fear with a bright, smiling veneer. Will Caitlyn's new ability lead her into hot water? Or is her new found vision a blessing that will expose her friends' true colors?

Her quest will lead Caitlyn to lose friends, stand up for those in need, and even find love.

At Palisades High School every face tells a story...

  6. LOVE how it was a unique kind of paranormal power! And how it's character-based in that it has to do with how you view others!

Glad to see there's romance and mystery and it sounds like the kind of book I'd love :)

    Lovely review :)
