Book Boyfriend: Will Herondale

We decided that Thursday needed a little pizazz and stumbled on this meme while hanging out at one of our favorite blogs, A Book and a Cupcake. So we took ourselves over to The Unread Reader to see what it was all about and join the fun. The Unread Reader features this meme on Wednesdays, but we figured moving our participation to Thursday wouldn't hurt anything. We'd love it if you'd leave a comment if you participate in this so we can check out your book boyfriends as well.

My Book Boyfriend is. . . .
Will Herondale

from The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare

Warning: This post will contain spoilers after the jump break! Please, if you haven't yet read Clockwork Prince, don't open the whole page. . . I don't want to be responsible for you having the book spoiled!!

Will is a seventeen-year-old Shadowhunter in Victorian England. He and Jem Carstairs, his best friend and parabatai, reside at the London Institute- along with several friends, all of whom are dedicated to ridding their world of demons and evildoers.

Appearance: dark hair, blue eyes, and a beautiful face: elegant cheekbones, a full mouth, and long, thick lashes. "Even the curve of his throat was perfect. He looked like every fictional hero she'd ever conjured up in her head." ~ Clockwork Angel, page 36

Will's training as a Shadowhunter has resulted in a slim but muscled build. His fingers are calloused from training with weapons. He bears Marks on his skin, as do many Shadowhunters- one for memory above his heart, and another signifying his covenant with his parabatai.
Facts about Will:
At age 12, Will accidentally released a demon from a pyxis. The demon cursed him, declaring that any who loved Will would suffer and die. Will's older sister died that night- and Will has spent every day of his life since pushing away anyone who might grow to love him, in an effort to keep them all from harm.
Will quotes:
"If it had been possible. . . that you could have returned the love of the man you see before yourself- flung away, wasted, drunken, poor creature of misuse as you know him to be- he would have been conscious this day and hour, in spite of his happiness, that he would bring you to misery, bring you to sorrow and repentance, blight you, disgrace you, pull you down with him-" ~ Will, quoting A Tale of Two Cities

Drat Will, for always being able to make her laugh, even when she didn't want to, even when she knew that opening her heart to him even an inch was like taking a pinch of some deadly addictive drug. ~ Tessa

I would never let anyone touch a hair on your head. You know that, don't you, Tess? ~ Will

I read them all. Every word you wrote. You and I, Tess, we're alike. We live and breathe words. It was books that kept me from taking my own life after I thought I could never love anyone, never be loved by anyone again. It was books that made me feel that perhaps I was not completely alone. They could be honest with me, and I with them. Reading your words, what you wrote, how you were lonely sometimes and afraid, but always brave; the way you saw the world, its colors and textures and sounds, I felt- I felt the way you thought, hoped, felt, dreamed. I felt I was dreaming and thinking and feeling with you. I dreamed what you dreamed, wanted what you wanted- and then I realized that truly I just wanted you.The girl behind the scrawled letters I loved you from the moment I read them. I love you still. ~ Will

Beautiful, brave, strong, self-sacrificing. . . AND he loves books! Is Will Herondale your book boyfriend yet?

  1. Sigh. I loved Will from the beginning of Clockwork Angel. Clockwork Prince absolutely broke my heart. </3 Hopefully, Cassandra Clare will steer the story in a different direction in Clockwork Princess.

  2. Oh, how I love me some Will Herondale!! He's my favorite Shadowhunter.

Here are a few of my favorite quotes about Will-

“Will smiled the way Lucifer might have smiled, moments before he fell from Heaven.”

“Look at him. The face of a bad angel and eyes like the night sky in Hell. He's very pretty, and vampires like that. I can't say I mind either.”
