My thoughts:
I know- I am way behind in becoming a Kiersten White fan. I was wrong to put off reading this one, just because I was a bit weary of all the "oooh, you have to read this!" comments I was seeing all over the place. I should have trusted my friends; they know what they are talking about. There. You were all right, I was wrong. Just for the record, I didn't bow to the pressure; I bought it to support my school book fair. Moving on now.

This is where I tell you how glad I am that I support my school book fair. Because I don't know if I would have picked this book up otherwise, and I would have missed out on a really fun read.

Paranormalcy is colorful, fluffy version of those creepy books that can otherwise leave a person a little spooked. Since I spend my days with middle school kids, this was right up my alley; I am accustomed to  people like Evie, whose family life is a serious brand of abnormal, yet her interactions with others are uncannily typical for a person her age. Evie is an unsung hero, who not only survives difficult circumstances, but thrives. She at once petulant and bratty, and the next moment behaves in a spirit of genuine helpfulness. She undervalues her own contribution, and underestimates her own strength. And some of the best fun of the book is watching her discover some of both.

As the title indicates, this book has all sorts of paranormal characters: vampires, werewolves, faeries, a mermaid, and a whole host of other assorted creatures- including one you probably haven't seen before. The author gives us all the fun of our favorite flavor of paranormal, while keeping the focus on Evie. Niiiiice work, Kiersten White.

If you are like me, and generally avoid books and such that have been this talked up, please don't make the same mistake I did. Take a deep breath and dive in, because yes, Paranormalcy really is that good.

Summary from GoodReads:
Weird as it is working for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, Evie’s always thought of herself as normal. Sure, her best friend is a mermaid, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she's falling for a shape-shifter, and she's the only person who can see through paranormals' glamours, but still. Normal.

Only now paranormals are dying, and Evie's dreams are filled with haunting voices and mysterious prophecies. She soon realizes that there may be a link between her abilities and the sudden rash of deaths. Not only that, but she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.

So much for normal.
