Emptying the Nest: June 2012 Edition

So, we all have those books sitting on our shelves that we have already read and don't have a use for anymore. It doesn't mean that those books weren't great reads for us once upon a time. However, books are meant to be read so we here at Reading Lark will be giving our readers a chance to give some of our old books a new lease on life. All books are used, but still in good condition. All you have to do to enter is be a Reading Lark follower  and fill out the rafflecopter form. The form will also give you some ways to earn extra entries. We have made a slight change and will be doing this giveaway every other month instead of every month. This idea was originally inspired by the Secondhand Saturday event at Reading Teen.

Basic Rules:

* You must be 18 years or older to enter the Adult Giveaways.
* You must pay live in the country specified for each giveaway. We have options for readers in the United States, Canada, and the UK.
* The June event runs from 6/24-7/15. Winners will be announced on 7/16.

Here are the books you could snag in June - You can enter to win as many of them as you'd like. Each giveaway has its own rafflecopter form and expectations. We have TEN awesome giveaways for you this month. It will be possible for you to win more than once if you enter for more than one book.

Giveaway #1: The Wild Girls by Pat Murphy (YA) - US & CA

It is the early 1970s. Twelve-year-old Joan is sure that she is going to be miserable when her family moves from Connecticut to California. Then she meets a most unusual girl. Sarah prefers to be called ?Fox,? and lives with her author dad in a rundown house in the middle of the woods. The two girls start writing their own stories together, and when one wins first place in a student contest, they find themselves recruited for a summer writing class taught by the equally unusual Verla Volante. The Wild Girlsis about friendship, the power of story, and how coming of age means finding your own answers?rather than simply taking adults on faith.

Giveaway #2: After the Snow by S.D. Crockett (YA) - UK

Fifteen-year-old Willo was out hunting when the trucks came and took his family away. Left alone in the snow, Willo becomes determined to find and rescue his family, and he knows just who to talk with to learn where they are. He plans to head across the mountains and make Farmer Geraint tell him where his family has gone.

But on the way across the mountain, he finds Mary, a refugee from the city, whose father is lost and who is starving to death. The smart thing to do would be to leave her alone -- he doesn't have enough supplies for two or the time to take care of a girl -- but Willo just can't do it. However, with the world trapped in an ice age, the odds of them surviving on their own are not good. And even if he does manage to keep Mary safe, what about finding his family?

Giveaway #3: Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson (YA) - CA

Lia and Cassie were best friends, wintergirls frozen in matchstick bodies. But now Cassie is dead. Lia's mother is busy saving other people's lives. Her father is away on business. Her step-mother is clueless. And the voice inside Lia's head keeps telling her to remain in control, stay strong, lose more, weigh less. If she keeps on going this way—thin, thinner, thinnest—maybe she'll disappear altogether.

In her most emotionally wrenching, lyrically written book since the National Book Award finalist Speak, best-selling author Laurie Halse Anderson explores one girl's chilling descent into the all-consuming vortex of anorexia.

Giveaway #4: Seraphina by Rachel Hartman *ARC* (YA) - UK

Four decades of peace have done little to ease the mistrust between humans and dragons in the kingdom of Goredd. Folding themselves into human shape, dragons attend court as ambassadors, and lend their rational, mathematical minds to universities as scholars and teachers. As the treaty's anniversary draws near, however, tensions are high.

Seraphina Dombegh has reason to fear both sides. An unusually gifted musician, she joins the court just as a member of the royal family is murdered—in suspiciously draconian fashion. Seraphina is drawn into the investigation, partnering with the captain of the Queen's Guard, the dangerously perceptive Prince Lucian Kiggs. While they begin to uncover hints of a sinister plot to destroy the peace, Seraphina struggles to protect her own secret, the secret behind her musical gift, one so terrible that its discovery could mean her very life.

In her exquisitely written fantasy debut, Rachel Hartman creates a rich, complex, and utterly original world. Seraphina's tortuous journey to self-acceptance is one readers will remember long after they've turned the final page.

Giveaway #5: The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan (YA) - UK

In Mary's world there are simple truths. The Sisterhood always knows best. The Guardians will protect and serve. The Unconsecrated will never relent. And you must always mind the fence that surrounds the village; the fence that protects the village from the Forest of Hands and Teeth. But, slowly, Mary’s truths are failing her. She’s learning things she never wanted to know about the Sisterhood and its secrets, and the Guardians and their power, and about the Unconsecrated and their relentlessness. When the fence is breached and her world is thrown into chaos, she must choose between her village and her future—between the one she loves and the one who loves her. And she must face the truth about the Forest of Hands and Teeth. Could there be life outside a world surrounded in so much death?

Giveaway #6: The Proper Care and Feeding of Zombies by Mac Montandon (Adult) - UK

A scientific look at zombies--the ultimate guide to how the other half lives (or not). Here are the answers to essential zombie questions, with a lively, science-based exploration of every aspect of the undead.

Giveaway #7: Survivors by James Wesley Rawles (Adult) - US & CA

WHAT IF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT ENDED TOMORROW?
The America we are accustomed to is no more. Practically overnight the stock market has plummeted, hyperinflation has crippled commerce, and the fragile chains of supply and high-technology infrastructure have fallen. The power grids are down. Brutal rioting and looting grip every major city. The volatile era known as “the Crunch” has begun, and this new period in our history will leave no one untouched. In this unfamiliar environment, only a handful of individuals are equipped to survive.
Andrew Laine, a resourceful young U.S. Army officer stationed overseas in Afghanistan, wants nothing more than to return home to Bloomfield, New Mexico. With the world in turmoil and all air and sea traffic to America suspended, Laine must rely on his own ingenuity and the help of good Samaritans to reach his family. Andrew will do whatever it takes to make it home to his fiancée, no matter how difficult the circumstances.
Major Ian Doyle is a U.S. Air Force pilot stationed in Arizona with his wife, Blanca. Their young daughter, Linda, is trapped in the North- eastern riots. Three teenage orphans, Shadrach, Reuben, and Matthew Phelps, have no choice but to set out on their own when their orphanage closes at the beginning of the Crunch. Then there is Ignacio Garcia, the ruthless leader of the criminal gang called La Fuerza, who will stop at nothing to amass an army capable of razing the countryside. And over everything looms the threat of a provisional government, determined to take over America and destroy the freedoms upon which it was built. The world of Survivors is a terrifyingly familiar one. Rawles has written a novel so close to the truth, readers will forget it’s fiction. If everything you thought you knew suddenly fell apart, would you survive?

Giveaway #8: Chasing Amanda by Melissa Foster (Adult) - US & CA

Nine years ago, Molly Tanner witnessed a young girl’s abduction in the busy city of Philadelphia, shifting her occasional clairvoyance into overdrive. Two days later, the girl’s body was found, and Molly’s life fell apart. Consumed by guilt for not acting upon her visions, and on the brink of losing her family, Molly escaped the torturous reminders in the city, fleeing to the safety of the close-knit rural community of Boyds, Maryland.

Molly’s life is back on track, her son has begun college, and she and her husband have finally rekindled their relationship. Their fresh start is shattered when a seven-year-old girl disappears from a local park near Molly’s home. Unable to turn her back on another child and troubled by memories of the past, Molly sets out to find her, jeopardizing the marriage she’d fought so hard to hold together. While unearthing clues and struggling to decipher her visions, Molly discovers another side of Boyds, where the residents--and the land itself--hold potentially lethal secrets, and exposes another side of her husband, one that threatens to tear them apart.

  2. I am a high school English teacher, and Laurie Halse Anderson's books are HUGE hits with my students. I've had to replace Twisted a few times, which says something, because the boys are the ones who read it and steal - I mean keep - it. I'd love to get this new one to add to our collection.

Dead Until Dark is one of my favorite Sookie books. The series got to long and drawn out for me, but I really enjoyed things until around book six.

  7. I don't come across stories set in the 1970s but every time I do I enjoy the time period. Coming of age stories tend to resonate with me and that's why I want to read The Wild Girls.

Wintergirls has such a unique premise. I imagine that losing your best friend would be very traumatic and I'm interesting to see how a friend can go on. I can see why the story is emotionally wrenching.

I recently started reading post-acopalypic stories so Survivors caught my eye. The world-building sounds great in a scary sort of way.

I want to read Chasing Amanda because I have a couple of Melissa Foster's books on my wishlist. Molly is a character I would want to cheer on.

Also, I have seen Charlaine Harris's books everywhere. I keep telling myself to start the series but haven't. I'll probably kick myself for taking so long when I do start it AND start watching True Blood. Vampires are my fav paranormal creatures so I can't put it off too long.

Happy reading everywhere! Thanks for a great selection of books :)
