Author Interview & Giveaway: Sarah Fine

We are excited to welcome author, Sarah Fine, to the nest today. Be sure to check out the giveaway details at the end of this post.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: Why did you choose to write YA?

Sarah: It wasn't an intentional decision. I wrote a book with characters who were in their 20's, and someone commented that I had a youthful “voice”, which kind of caught me by surprise. But then I started writing teen characters, and there was no going back.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: Can you describe your novel in five words?

Sarah: Dark, psychological, scary, romantic, hopeful.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: What was the last book you read?

Sarah: Deviants by Maureen McGowan.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: Were you a reader as a child?

Sarah: Yes. I was raised in a house full of books, and my parents, most often my dad, read to me and my sisters every night. That’s where my love of the written word began.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: Who is your current book boyfriend?

Sarah: I confess an intense fondness for Four—I recently finished Insurgent. I love the male YA heroes who aren't “bad boys”, but who are quieter, maybe a little damaged ... and deadly.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: Who are three of your favorite authors?

Sarah: Salman Rushdie, Sarah Beth Durst, Brigid Kemmerer

Andrea @ Reading Lark: What is your favorite bird?

Sarah: Er … Roseate Spoonbill. Someday I’ll probably give a character that name. Seriously—is this bird not both magnificent AND ridiculous?

This or That?
 - Batman or Superman? Easy—Batman. I prefer heroes who don’t have supernatural powers, who can get beat up and hurt just like the rest of us.
- Necklace or Bracelet? Bracelet. I don’t like to have things around my neck that much.
- Cookies or Cupcakes? Cupcakes. Unless the cookies have icing on them.
- Summer or Winter? Winter. I hate heat.
- Fantasy or Reality? Depends on which professional hat I’m wearing.

"My plan: Get into the city. Get Nadia. Find a way out. Simple."

A week ago, seventeen-year-old Lela Santos's best friend, Nadia, killed herself. Today, thanks to a farewell ritual gone awry, Lela is standing in paradise, looking upon a vast gated city in the distance – hell. No one willingly walks through the Suicide Gates, into a place smothered in darkness and infested with depraved creatures. But Lela isn't just anyone – she's determined to save her best friend's soul, even if it means sacrificing her eternal afterlife.

As Lela struggles to find Nadia, she's captured by the Guards, enormous, not-quite-human creatures that patrol the dark city's endless streets. Their all-too-human leader, Malachi, is unlike them in every way except one: his deadly efficiency. When he meets Lela, Malachi forms his own plan: get her out of the city, even if it means she must leave Nadia behind. Malachi knows something Lela doesn't – the dark city isn't the worst place Lela could end up, and he will stop at nothing to keep her from that fate.
