Best I've Read 2012: Betrayal by Gregg Olsen

The third book we are featuring this year is Betrayal by Gregg Olsen.

Andrea had the opportunity to interview Gregg for the event and we are also offering our readers a chance to win a SIGNED copy of Betrayal. Check out the synopsis of Betrayal and the giveaway details at the end of this post. The Larks would like to thank Gregg Olsen for his time and for providing the giveaway.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: Port Gamble is such an intriguing setting. What made you choose this town to be the home of the Ryan twins?

Gregg: At first glance, Port Gamble is a postcard pretty town – seaside location, charming old homes, beautiful gardens. I like the idea of something very mysterious, strange and even evil (!) a place that looks perfect. It was the perfect setting for the series! Because in Port Gamble, not everything is at it seems. Hayley and Taylor know that better than anyone!

Andrea @ Reading Lark: I love that you use real crime as inspiration for your fiction. Why did you choose the Amanda Knox case as the inspiration behind Betrayal

Gregg: Amanda’s case is very complex and I like that. At first, I thought she was guilty. Then I thought she was innocent. Then I wasn't sure! The complexities of real life crimes always intrigue me. Didn't someone once say truth is stranger than fiction!? I think so!

Andrea @ Reading Lark: Who is your favorite character to write in the Empty Coffin series?

Gregg: I love Beth Lee, Taylor and Hayley's best friend. I love the funny, tough, artsy girl, who has a shell around her. That’s Beth! I know so many kids like her. They act like everything is just fine, but inside they are in search of something. I love Beth because I know the source of her hurt…and as I writer I have the power to help her out of. It isn't so easy in real life.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: What prompted you to try writing YA after so many years of writing for adults?

Gregg: It really came from a chance meeting with an editor at a trade show. I hadn't thought of it, but now, I regret that I hadn't found the genre sooner. I love my YA readers. I can’t say enough wonderful things about the community of readers, bloggers, teachers, and librarians. Really, the BEST readers in the world are YA readers. Thank you for letting me into your club!

Andrea @ Reading Lark: Can you share anything about the next book in the series?

Gregg: Nope. It’s a secret. I will have some news soon and I’ll make sure I share it with you.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: This last question is a Reading Lark tradition. What is your favorite bird?

Gregg: My favorite bird is a robin. I love the color of their eggs (is there a more beautiful color?) and the way they listen for worms in our Northwest lawns. We have eagles and herons and all sorts of birds outside our window every day, but for me the humble robin is my favorite.

About the Novel

In this action-packed thriller sequel to Envy, foreign exchange student Olivia Grant is stabbed to death after a party--and the prime suspect is her best friend. As twins Hayley and Taylor Ryan get pulled into the aftermath of this Amanda Knox-like crime, they realize nothing is what it seems. Could it be betrayal of the ultimate kind?

Betrayal features real-life crime-solving techniques, heart-stopping suspense, plenty of red herrings, hard-hitting ethical questions, and information about the Amanda Knox case that inspired the novel. As the crime unravels, so does the twins' past…and they must face off against a family member who may unexpectedly have carried out the worst betrayal of all.

  3. My Mom and Sister and I went to Forks this summer on a girls trip and stopped in Port Gamble on the way. That is where we all picked up a signed copy of "Envy" and all fell in love with Gregg Olson's writing. Not to mention after being in the setting it brings back such wonderful memories! Thanks for the chance to win and read this book!
