Best I've Read 2012: Fracture by Megan Miranda

The first book we are featuring this year is Fracture by Megan Miranda. Be sure to read Jen's review of Fracture.

Jen had the opportunity to interview Megan for the event and we are also offering our readers a chance to snag their very own copy of Fracture. Check out the synopsis of Fracture and the giveaway details at the end of the interview. The Larks would like to thank Bloomsbury for providing the giveaway and Megan Miranda for her time.

Jen @ Reading Lark: I loved the blend of science and paranormal in Fracture; it made the story seem so fresh and real. What was your stimulus for writing a story about a girl who fell through the ice and developed strange abilities?

Megan: My background is in biology, and I’ve always been drawn to science because I’m someone who loves for things to “make sense.” But the more I learned, the more I found myself drawn to the stories that didn’t make sense—the things that science couldn’t quite explain. And for me, there is still so much unknown about the brain. In general, I was really captivated by stories of people who survived things that science would deem “unsurvivable.” In addition, I heard stories of people who developed a tumor, or had a tumor removed, and their personalities would change. Which, to me, begged the question: which person are they? Are we more than the wiring of our brain? How do others see us, and how do we see ourselves, after that change? It was all these questions that sparked the idea behind Fracture.

Jen @ Reading Lark: Eleven Minutes was a great companion read to Fracture, and I loved seeing what happened while Delaney was comatose. How did Eleven Minutes come into being? Was it while you were writing Fracture, or did you write it afterwards, and what did you make of writing Decker’s side of things?

Megan: It was something that came later. I did realize, while I was writing Fracture, that there were all these side stories in my head that would not make it onto the page since everything was filtered through Delaney’s perspective. My publisher asked if I’d be interested in putting out a short story set in the world of Fracture before publication, and the idea for Eleven Minutes just logically jumped out at me. I loved sharing Decker’s point of view. I loved it so much, in fact, that Vengeance will be narrated by him.

Jen @ Reading Lark: Decker is one of my favourite book boyfriends and I can’t wait for Vengeance in 2014, although it seems so far away! Will we be seeing Decker and Delaney again, or will Vengeance focus on other characters from the Fracture cast?

Megan: Yes! Decker is the narrator of Vengeance, and you will definitely be seeing Delaney (and their friends) again. There are also a few new characters added to the mix.

Jen @ Reading Lark: I barely put Fracture down while reading it – what books have kept you glued to your seat until your eyes start to ache?

Megan: Most recently: GONE GIRL by Gillian Flynn. Could not… stop… reading.

Jen @ Reading Lark: What can your readers look forward to in your next YA novel, Hysteria, releasing this February?

Megan: Hysteria is about a girl named Mallory who can’t be charged for killing her sort-of-boyfriend, and who then becomes haunted, or stalked—or both—by things that may or may not be real. Oh, and there’s another murder… It’s a psychological thriller that kind of walks that same line between the science and paranormal as in Fracture. And it’s also about friendship and love, the past and the present, guilt and forgiveness.

Jen @ Reading Lark: The final question is something of a tradition for author interviews at Reading Lark... what's your favorite bird and why?

Megan: The Raven. Not for any practical reason. I was a huge fan of Edgar Allan Poe growing up, and anytime I see a raven, it evokes such a mood to me now. Thanks for having me!

About the Novel

Eleven minutes passed before Delaney Maxwell was pulled from the icy waters of a Maine lake by her best friend Decker Phillips. By then her heart had stopped beating. Her brain had stopped working. She was dead. And yet she somehow defied medical precedent to come back seemingly fine. Everyone wants Delaney to be all right, but she knows she's far from normal. Pulled by strange sensations she can't control or explain, Delaney finds herself drawn to the dying. Is her altered brain now predicting death, or causing it?

Then Delaney meets Troy Varga, who recently emerged from a coma with similar abilities. At first she's reassured to find someone who understands the strangeness of her new existence, but Delaney soon discovers that Troy's motives aren't quite what she thought. Is their gift a miracle, a freak of nature-or something much more frightening?

For fans of best-sellers like Before I Fall and If I Stay, this is a fascinating and heart-rending story about love and friendship and the fine line between life and death.
