Armchair BEA: Genre Fiction
Today's topic is Genre Fiction. I'm truly a junkie when it comes to this sort of reading. My favorite genres are fantasy (mainly of the paranormal variety) and contemporary YA & NA romance.
I've never really pondered why some of these genres don't get the same respect as novels in the more classic definition of fiction. I read what I enjoy and choose not to worry about others who may disagree with my reading choices. Reading is an escape and should be enjoyable. These are the sorts of novels that make me happy. I feel no need to apologize for that if they don't meet the approval of another reader.
In addition, there is symbolism and social commentary in these novels. They have value on both the enjoyment and thought provoking scales.
Here are some of my favorites that could be classified as genre fiction that I have read in 2013:
I'm dying to get my hands on Goddess! :)
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading about your insights into genres
Goddess was a great read! You can check out my review if you're curious. It's spoiler free. :)
DeleteCool post! I do sometimes expect other adults to judge me based on my reading choices, but it doesn't worry me to the point where I would change what I read to appear differently.
ReplyDeleteSometimes you need a little teen lust, mermaid sparkles or angst to help you put your own life into perspective.
Thanks for checking out the post, Jen. I agree - sometimes I wonder what other adults think when they see me with my nose buried in a YA or NA book. I love your last line and think it's a perfect fit for me!
DeleteI agree...sometimes I think I imagine I have two heads when I tell someone I love YA and NA fiction! But I'm not embarrassed by it...some of the best stories I've ever read can be found in the YA section!
DeleteI love Stephanie Perkins! I've been meaning to read Let the Sky Fall! I don't mind reading what I enjoy, regardless of genre or intended age group! I'm glad to see others feel the same way!

Anna and Lola are some of my very most favorite books EVER! I wish the YA books got more respect, but hey...I'll always love them, and for me, that's what counts!
ReplyDeleteI'm a huge YA fan which carried much more stigma for me as an adult before Harry Potter and The Hunger Games. ;) Like you I read what I enjoy regardless of what shelf I find it on. I really liked Anna and the French Kiss and am curious about Unbreakable.
ReplyDeleteFeel free to stop by and check out my Genre Fiction post.

ReplyDeleteCan't wait to read PARALLEL!
So many awesome books.
Ooo, you have some really good picks on here! *adds to TBR list*
