Teaser Tuesday: Cruel Beauty, Flowers in the Attic, & Aerenden

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly feature, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.

I was raised to marry a monster.

The day before the wedding, I could barely breathe. Fear and fury curdled in my stomach. All afternoon I skulked in the library, running my hands over the leather spines of books I would never touch again. I leaned against the shelves and wished I could run, wished I could scream at the people who had made this fate for me.

We were four children stumbling around in the broken pieces of our grief and loss. We would play in the back garden, trying to find solace in the sunshine, quite unaware that our lives were soon to change so drastically, so dramatically, that the words "backyard" and "garden" were to become for us synonyms for heaven -- and just as remote.

"The world will be reborn," he recited, placing his hands on Meagan's shoulders and turning her do she could see the raspberry bush beside the steps. The brown bush had turned green. Its branches now bore dozens of plump red berries. "It seems you have a new power. Shall we eat?"
