Teaser Tuesday: Rites of Passage, Upside Down, Illusions of Fate, & Sinner
Teaser Tuesday is a weekly feature, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.
The humidity of Virginia in August has me sweating before I take five steps. I might as well be swimming up to the gate with the air as thick as it is here. I glance into cars as I pass wide-eyed freshmen dressed in what we all have to report in - khaki pants, white button-down, black tie. Yes, a tie, even for the females. No special treatment for the first girls at the DMA.

Bran's laughter is deep, rowdy , and surprisingly infectious. Whoa - hello. Dimples? That's my weakness. My mouth dries, makes it hard to swallow. For a second he looks like a naughty boy, and my fingers twitch with the urge to muss his hair.

"Take a card." Gritting my teeth, I pluck a single card from the deck. I don't break eye contact. "Your card," I snap. I hold it up, and he staggers back as though I've dealt him a physical blow. The rest of the cards fall from his hands and whisper down to the carpet. "Wretched fates," he whispers. "I am sorrier than I can tell you." A cold something prickles down my spine, and I look at the card.

Just forget about everything. Just go somewhere and get smashed and pretend like there are no problems or consequences. I know why. Because there are still problems and consequences. And going and -- and -- partying doesn't make them go away. I feel like I'm the only sane person on the world. I don't get why this whole world runs on stupidity.
