Teaser Tuesday: Conspiracy of Blood and Smoke, Seeker, Avery, & Magonia

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly feature, hosted by MizB of A Daily Rhythm.

Gretchen swallowed against the sudden tightness in her throat, thinking of her father. He had never said such things to her, but she had known he had loved her by the way he danced with her around the kitchen or sat with her when she woke up from a nightmare. Loving Alfred wasn't being disloyal to Papa, she reminded herself for the thousandth time. It was finding a way to keep living, no matter what happened.

As if sensing his thoughts, Briac stepped between John and the bed. John’s eyes were drawn to Briac’s old leather boots with their heavy soles and metal tips, so out of place in this tidy medical setting. They were the boots of a man who’d done terrible things.

"It shouldn't have to be so hard," Ava whispered and she sounded so weary.

I shrugged a little helplessly, "We have no say, in this life, in how hard things will be. What we can control is how hard we fight. How long we endure. How strongly we love."

When it's my turn to talk, I take off the alligator head, and recite a little chunk of pi. Then I say, as fast as possible: "So, you may or may not know that people keep finding more digits of that number. I wanted to give Aza all the digits. I tried that, the first time we met. I found out later that she knew more digits than I did. I was trying to give her something that wouldn't ever end."
