Author Interview: Kelley Armstrong

We're exited to welcome the author of the Cainesville Series, Kelley Armstrong, to Reading Lark today. She's here to answer a few questions about the final installment in the Cainesville novels, Rituals. I'm a huge fan of Kelley's work. I adore her Women of the Otherworld series and her YA novels. I was excited to have the chance to ask her some questions about this series since she is one of my favorite authors.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: Where did you get the idea to create the Cainsville series?

Kelley: I started with three very different ideas.

I’d read a few “Cinderella” type books—young woman who rises to power from nothing—and I became fascinated by the idea of reversing that. I wanted to do a young woman who starts at the top, loses everything and discovers she’s happier for it—the idea that she is better suited to a life where she has to fight for what she wants.

I’ve also always wanted to explore a “child of killers” plot—how would that affect your sense of self, your concerns about your own nature, and what if those killers were actually very good parents, people you loved?

Put those two ideas together and I had the impetus for a plot—young woman who has everything loses it all when she discovers her real parents are murderers.

My third plot idea was the “small town with a secret” trope. That became Cainsville.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: How does it feel to bring the Cainsville series to an end?

Kelley: I could go much farther with this world and these characters, but I plotted their arc for five books, and this is their natural conclusion. Beyond this, I’ll write short fiction and novellas for them. That will help ease the separation!

Andrea @ Reading Lark: Are you working on anything new?

Kelley: I’m currently editing book 3 in my Rockton series, which comes out in February 2018. This is the series that is taking over for Cainsville…I just started the transition a little early! It’s a mystery series set in the Yukon, in a hidden small town where people go to disappear.

In YA, I’m working on standalones right now. My next one is Aftermath. It’s a thriller about a girl who returns to her hometown three years after her brother was involved in a school shooting. That comes out in April 2018.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: Which of the characters in this series is most like you?

Kelley: My characters always have aspects of myself…and they’re always very small aspects. For Olivia, we share a love of fast cars and mochas.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: If this novel was an ice cream flavor, which one would it be?

Kelley: Rocky Road. It’s a mix of genre flavours, which for me—as a writer—added up to something delicious.

Andrea @ Reading Lark: It's a tradition to end with this question here at Reading Lark, what is your favorite bird?

Kelley: Since we’re talking Cainsville, I have to say ravens, of course ☺

The fifth book and the exciting conclusion to bestselling author Kelley Armstrong's "impossible-to-put-down" Cainsville series, in which she mixes hard-hitting crime writing with phenomenal world-building to create a brand of fiction all her own.

Olivia Jones must make a choice. Caught between two rival supernatural forces, Liv was granted a brief period in which to make her decision. Now that time has run out. Whichever side she chooses, someone she loves will pay. Her lover, Ricky. Gabriel Walsh, the man she knows she cannot, must not love. Her parents, already trapped in prison. And now there is a new, terrifying power rising - one that doesn't distinguish between good and evil intentions. It feeds on chaos and destroys without mercy. Unless Liv acts fast, no one will survive. In this gripping thriller, international bestselling author Kelley Armstrong brings the Cainsville series to a powerful, richly rewarding climax.
