Read my review of book 1, Reign of Shadows.

I love this series! I originally thought it would be a trilogy, and it still could be, though by the way Rise of Fire ended, it seems as though the author has crafted it so that it can be a satisfying ending. Whether this is the final volume or there are further adventures in store, Rise of Fire was a fantastic read.

The story indeed picks up right in the middle of the action. A major character has been carried off to a monster's lair, the other lead must leap into action to make a rescue attempt, and it seems as though things could get no worse. Ah, silly characters- a great author can always think of some thing worse, and Ms. Jordan certainly does. Mythical monsters have nothing on the cruelty and inhumanity that can be demonstrated by humans themselves.

I absolutely adore how capable and strong this heroine is. She is an atypical princess: she is the smartest, toughest character in the book. She is selfless, yet so very cunning about who deserves her loyalty and love. She recognizes the potential danger of loving others, and takes that chance anyway. She understands the importance of maintaining her composure, especially around dangerous characters. She lives with a physical disability, yet absolutely never lets it provide her with an excuse for weakness. Luna is everything all young girls should strive to be.

A new love interest for each main character is introduced in this volume. Instead of causing Luna's and Fowler's relationship to crumble, these obstacles provide contrast that helps them clearly see what they mean to each other. They quickly learn that there isn't time to deny their feelings when they could die at any moment, and some steamy kissy scenes ensue.

I absolutely recommend these books to my friends who have enjoyed other YA fantasy series that feature strong girls facing monsters with a side of hot boy. You will tear through these books in just a few days, but they are sooooo worth it.

The richly suspenseful sequel to Sophie Jordan’s romantic fantasy Reign of Shadows.

Luna and Fowler have escaped the kingdom of Relhok, but they haven’t escaped the darkness. When a battle against the dark dwellers mortally injures Fowler, Luna is faced with a choice: put their fate in the hands of mysterious strangers or risk losing Fowler forever.

Desperate to keep the one bright part of her life alive, Luna accepts the help of soldiers from a nearby kingdom. Lagonia’s castle offers reprieve from the dangerous outside world—until the king discovers both Fowler's and Luna’s true ties to Relhok and their influence over the throne.

Now pawns in each kingdom’s political game, Luna and Fowler are more determined than ever to escape and build the life they’ve been dreaming of. But their own pasts have a tight hold on their hearts and their destinies. Luna must embrace the darkness and fire within her before she loses not only Fowler, but the power she was destined to inherit.
