Thalia thought of her Aunt Elizabeth once more, as she looked on. All these women. Surely they had also lost their own sons, nephews, husbands. Yet there they were - dressed, walking down the street, talking, laughing. Living. For the last nine years, Aunt Elizabeth had been a shadow of a woman, waiting to die, as her eldest son had died. It was odd, but, living at Lintern Park, this didn't seem so awfully strange. It was simply the way things were.

But, once again, Armand did the unexpected. He bent his head and pressed his lips to the inside of my wrist, right up against the scar and my humming pulse.
