I thought I was ready, but to see him in my world, unhinging all that was once normal, revealing everything I've worked so hard to hide... it paralyzes me. I hold my breath, ears burning, and wait for the terrified screams when the girls realize what he is - what I am.

"Actually I need your help. You see, your friends are hot. And you, darling, are the Duff."
"Is that even a word?"
"Designated. Ugly. Fat. Friend," he clarified. "No offence, but that would be you."

Yes, Tony loved me, but now that I wasn't in his arms and could think clearly again, I could see that he wasn't good for me. Not for the long haul. He was restless and impulsive; two traits that didn't bode well for a gambler. There was no reasoning with the risk-taker in him. He was drawn to the excitement and at times I wondered if that explained his attraction to me. Was I just another wager, a pretty prize wrapped up in dangerous stakes?

"You're our yacht, bud. All that money that would have gone into a yacht, all that time we would have spent traveling the world? Instead, we got you. It turns out that the yacht is a boat. But you- you can't be bought on credit, and you aren't reducible." He turns his face back toward the TV and after a moment says, "I'm so proud of you that it makes me proud of me. I hope you know that."

She felt Nick's hand on her cheek and she opened her eyes. "I'm the one who should be sorry," he told her. "I'm not doing a good job of protecting you, am I?"
"So far, I'd say you are." She covered his hand with hers and smiled. "I'm still alive, despite my tendency for getting into trouble. At the rate I'm going, you'll wish you'd never met me by tomorrow afternoon."
