Author Interview & Giveaway: Naomi Hughes
We're exited to welcome author, Naomi Hughes, to Reading Lark today. She's here to answer a few questions about her new novel, Afterimage.
Andrea @ Reading Lark: How did you get the idea for Afterimage?
Naomi: Afterimage has been through so many stages of evolution, it's hard to keep track of where it all started! But when I got the very-first teeny-tiny seed of the idea that would eventually snowball into this story, I was watching Neil deGrasse Tyson's Cosmos: a Spacetime Odyssey. It's a really cool docuseries about all sorts of neat science-y stuff. My previous books had all been fantasy, but while watching Cosmos I couldn't help but get the urge to start writing a new sci-fi project--something involving a new branch of physics, maybe. The next day I bought a notebook and started brainstorming.
Andrea @ Reading Lark: What are your writing must-haves?
Naomi: A glass of water, a notebook and sticky notes to jot down important thoughts before I forget them (which tends to happen quickly), and most importantly, silence! I've never been able to work with music going or something loud happening elsewhere in the house.
Andrea @ Reading Lark: Which celebrity would you cast as Camryn?
Naomi: This is a tough one! I think maybe Kathryn Newton?
Andrea @ Reading Lark: What would Quint's theme song be?
Naomi: Demons by Imagine Dragons.
Andrea @ Reading Lark: What drink would be Camryn's regular order at Starbucks?
Naomi: Salted caramel mocha in the fall, java chip frappuccino in the summer.
Andrea @ Reading Lark: It's our tradition to end with this question. What is your favorite bird?
Naomi: Hummingbirds! They're so adorable but also so incredibly hardworking. I have a flowering bush outside my office window, and whenever I get stuck writing or plotting I stare outside--and in the summer when the bush blooms, I get to watch all sorts of hummingbirds snacking there.
A horrific explosion levels part of the city and Camryn Kingfisher is the sole survivor.
Amidst controversy, conspiracy theories, and threats from government officials, Camryn longs for the truth. But the only person who she can turn to is a transparent boy in a lab coat named Quint. Unsure whether he’s a hallucination or a ghost, Camryn has no choice but to trust him as they become embroiled in a plot that is bigger than either of them realize.
In a race where the fabric of time and space is at stake, they must figure out who caused the explosion before the culprit comes back to finish Camryn―and her city―off for good.
