Romance

Check Me Out was a fun read about a librarian, Greta, and libraries. One of the things I really enjoyed about this book was that it reminded me of the old library in the town where I grew up. Check Me Out had romance, great quotes, and even a bit of social unrest.

I loved the discussion in the book of how libraries must now compete in an increasingly digital world. Greta's tweets about the library were funny and extremely relevant in today's world. The great lengths she went through to save the library were entertaining to read.

My favorite character in the book ended up being Marigold, a hippie wannabe that wandered into the library and wound up being a good friend to Greta. She had some good comedic lines and also played a good sounding board for Greta when she needed it.

I appreciated that Greta went through some maturing in the book, but I thought she was pretty vapid in the beginning. I also struggled with how her best friend, Will, was described in the book. He's severely overweight - we get it. But some of the descriptions seemed downright cruel. It's a good think he's in love with Greta!

If you're looking for a book with fluff and nothing deep, this book fits the bill. Sometimes we all just need a bit of fluff in our life!

Summary:

Greta loves her job as assistant librarian. She loves her best friend, Will, the high school civics teacher and debate coach. She even loves her mother despite her obvious disappointment that Greta is still single.

Then she meets Mac in the poetry section of the library, and she is smitten. Mac is heart-stoppingly gorgeous and showers her with affection, poetic text messages, and free hot chocolate at the local café where he works. The only problem is that he seems to be a different person in his texts than in his face-to-face conversation.

When the Franklin Library is threatened with closure, Greta leaps into action. She arranges for a "battle of the bands" book jam, hosts a book signing by a famous author, and finally, stages a protest that raises more than a few eyebrows.

Through it all, she slowly realizes that it is Will, not Mac, who she turns to for support and encouragement. Mac has the looks; Will has the heart. How can she choose between them?

Check Me Out is a contemporary romance--with just a hint of Cyrano de Bergerac--that reminds us that it is what's on the inside that matters most.

  1. This sounds like a cute, lighthearted read. Sometimes that's just right for a rainy weekend.
